This 1964 Pontiac GTO hardtop was built the 4th week of May 1964 in Pontiac, Michigan, and sold new at Dave Waite Pontiac in Indianapolis, Indiana. This 1964 Pontiac GTO hardtop was built the 4th week of May 1964 in Pontiac, Michigan, and sold new at Dave Waite Pontiac in Indianapolis, Indiana. The car is finished in red over black and powered by a refurbished 389ci V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission and 3.55:1 Saf-T-Track rear differential. Features include Tri-Power induction, a heavy-duty radiator, a Pypes dual exhaust, rear back-up lamps, a dual-speed wiper motor, a push-button AM radio, and 15″ steel wheels. Work since 2017 has consisted of a Hurst shifter rebuild, re-chroming the rear bumper, refinishing the flywheel, and installation of 2″ lowering springs as well as a replacement clutch and battery. The car resided in Indianapolis and was acquired and subsequently relocated to Pennsylvania by the current owner in 2015.
The car is said to have been refinished in Grenadier Red during a 2012 refurbishment. Details include chrome bumpers, dual chrome mirrors, and bright-finished rocker panel and wheel-well trim. The GTO option package included dual hood scoops, GTO badges, and dual exhaust tips.
The body-colored 15″ steel wheels wear Pontiac hubcaps and 225/60 Cooper CS5 Ultra tires. Braking is handled by hydraulic four-wheel drums. The rear of the car was lowered 2″ in 2018 with aftermarket springs.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in black vinyl with a matching dash, carpets, console, and door panels. Additional interior appointments include lap belts, a Hurst shifter with a cueball knob, vent windows, manual windows, and a push-button AM radio with optional reverb. The seat belts are said to have been replaced.
The three-spoke steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer, tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. An oil pressure and coolant temperature gauge have been mounted under the radio. The replacement five-digit odometer shows 1,800 miles. The seller notes the odometer was replaced when it broke at 60k miles and has driven the car approximately 3k miles since 2015. Total mileage is unknown.
The 389ci Tri-Power induction V8 was reportedly refurbished in 1994 with work that included 0.060″ overbore as well as piston, ring, cam, and bearing replacement. The cylinder heads were rebuilt by Indy Cylinder Head in 2010. An oil and battery change has been completed in preparation for sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a 3.55:1 Saf-T-Track rear differential. The clutch is said to have been replaced and the flywheel resurfaced.
